چکیده

This work investigates effects of vibrotactile stimuli and auditory feedback in perceiving roughness. One of objectives in the research is to derive functional correlations between perceived roughness and principal elements of vibrotactile stimuli. A tactile display device having a 5x6 pin array has been developed as the test bed for the quantitative experiment. Sandpapers were used as specimens of perceived roughness. The experimental results show that there is a tight correlation between perceived roughness and vibrotactile stimuli and their functional relations have been derived. The second objective of this research is to analyze the relation between perceived roughness and auditory feedback. Real sound samples recorded during rubbing surface of sandpaper specimens have been adopted as auditory feedback elements. The experimental results showed human could estimate surface roughness from auditory information if and only if he/she recognized the source of sounds. The results in this papers show possibilities to fortify representing roughness by using a tactileauditory display in a tangible environment beyond conventional approach changing sizes of grits or grooves on a surface.

The Effect of Auditory Cues on the Audiotactile Roughness Perception: Modulation Frequency and Sound Pressure Level

Scraping a surface with the finger tip is a multimodal event. We obtain information about the texture, i.e. roughness of the surface, at least through three different sensory channels, i.e. auditory, tactile and visual. People are highly skilled in using touch-produced sounds to identify texture properties. Sound pressure level, modulation frequency and pitch of the touch-induced scraping sound...

The Effective Combination of Haptic and Auditory Textural Information

With the increasing availability and quality of auditory and haptic means of interaction, it is not unusual to incorporate many modalities in interfaces rather than the purely visual. The user can be powerfully affected however when information presented in different modalities are combined to become multimodal. Providing interface designers with the means to implement haptic-audio interfaces m...

Sensing and Displaying Spatially Distributed Fingertip Forces in Haptic Interfaces for Teleoperator and Virtual Environment Systems

This article reports a variety of sensory and perceptual consequences of eliminating, via a rigid fingertip sheath, the spatially distributed fingertip force information that is normally available during tactile and haptic sensing. Sensory measures included tactile spatial acuity, tactile force, and vibrotactile thresholds. Suprathreshold tasks included perception of roughness, perception of 2-...

Vibration Influences Haptic Perception of Surface Compliance During Walking

BACKGROUND The haptic perception of ground compliance is used for stable regulation of dynamic posture and the control of locomotion in diverse natural environments. Although rarely investigated in relation to walking, vibrotactile sensory channels are known to be active in the discrimination of material properties of objects and surfaces through touch. This study investigated how the perceptio...
